About our Cooke Varotal FF 19–40mm T2.9 PL Hire

The Cooke Varotal 19-40mm lens is a part of the Varotal/i FF series, which is designed for professional motion picture photography.

This lens offers outstanding optical performance with minimal breathing, chromatic aberration, and distortion. The 19-40mm lens is the widest of the three Varotal/i FFs, weighing 7.7 pounds and suitable for Steadicam work, allowing for fluid moving shots while getting close to the subject.

From our Director of Photography Jack T. Smith

For the Hugo Boss HU-GO1ST Sneaker Launch shoot, we opted for the Cooke Varotal/i FF zoom lens. This choice was driven by our need to strike a balance between high-end cinema quality and the quick and convenient focal length changes that a zoom lens provides. Given the tight timeframes and ever-changing environments, the Varotal/i FF allowed me, as the DOP, to exercise creative freedom by selecting interesting focal lengths on the fly. These choices might have been challenging with fixed lenses due to the fast pace of the shoot.

The newer FF Varotal/i lenses are also lighter and more compact than the original Varotal, making them ideal for shooting on the bustling streets of East London, especially when paired with our Segway and Easy Rig Stabil. Due to the fast pace of the shoot, we ended up utilizing the 30-95mm lens exclusively throughout the day, paired with our ARRI Alexa Mini LF. This combination provided an excellent range of shots, from beautiful non-distorted wides to captivating tight compositions with stunning full-frame depth.
